What’s the Problem in Guatemala?
Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in all of Latin America. At the root of this poverty is an educational system that prevents children from having a real chance at acquiring the skills needed to improve their lives. Classrooms have no books, libraries, if they exist, have few useful books, and primary school teachers are mostly untrained high school graduates.
Not surprisingly, given this recipe for failure,
When you ride, you’ll be helping thousands of children have a real opportunity to learn to read
The purpose of the Child Aid Rural Librarian Training Program is to provide training to dedicated librarians in rural, mostly indigenous areas, so they can offer reading, book-lending and research programs to their community. We work directly with librarians to help them transform their libraries into viable, sustainable resources that promote literacy and education at the community level. The program connects to local schools and impacts thousands of rural Guatemalan children, helping them learn to read and, ultimately, succeed in school.
Proceeds from the bike ride will go directly to the Rural Librarian Training Program.
