Volunteer
Child Aid offers volunteer opportunities in Guatemala and Oaxaca, Mexico. In Guatemala, there is a particular need for volunteers who are librarians or primary school educators.
Whether it’s helping to organize rural libraries, providing technical assistance to staff, or working with children, volunteers are critical to our work in Latin America. Child Aid welcomes volunteers with a range of skills and expertise for periods of two weeks to one year and beyond. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred; however, you can discuss with us the specific language skills needed for a given area. The type of service is dependent on an individual’s field of study, professional experience and interest.
If you are interested in volunteering, please take a few moments to answer the following qualifying questions to see if volunteering with Child Aid would be a good match. Please email your answers directly to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Due to our size and the type of work we do in the rural communities, we are not able to accommodate volunteers with children.
1) Are you 21 or over?
2) What is your fluency level of Spanish?
3) Where do you want to volunteer?
4) What is your time frame of availability? Which dates? And how many hours per day?
5) Are you willing to travel in public buses for at least 30 minutes each direction?
6) Child Aid does not provide any stipend or living expenses. The minimum costs for basic food and accommodations is roughly $500/mo in Antigua, Guatemala or in Oaxaca, Mexico. Does that pose a problem?
7) What is your professional experience? (i.e. do you have a medical background, education background, technical expertise, etc.)
Once we receive the answers to your questions, we will work with you to determine if we have a volunteer opportunity that will meet your needs as well as ours and send you a Volunteer Application to complete.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Child Aid’s volunteer opportunities in Guatemala are oriented toward education, library sciences and child literacy. This can include volunteering in PROBIGUA’s mobile library, helping to staff existing libraries, cataloguing donated books and maintaining computer centers.
Volunteer service in Mexico, with our partner organization CORAL, is dependent on a volunteer’s field of study, professional experience and Spanish language proficiency. Volunteers at CORAL are typically trained audiologists, hearing specialists, speech therapists, special-education teachers, and art and music therapists.
