About Child Aid

Who We Are

MEET THE STAFF
Richard T. Carroll, Ph.D.
Co-founder and CEO

As co-founder of Child Aid, Richard has logged many an hour traveling to the furthest corners of Guatemala and Oaxaca. The multi-talented Dr. Carroll counts clinical psychologist, and professor among his former professions and financial planner and CEO of Child Aid among his current.

A New Yorker by birth, Rick lives in Portland with his wife and fellow founder of Child Aid, Nancy Press. He has a BA in philosophy from the University of Detroit and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from St. John’s University. When not in an airplane, Rick can be found bicycling or walking the Oregon trails with his favorite hiking partner, Gythio, German Shepherd extraordinaire.

Nancy Press, Ph.D.
Co-founder and Chair, Board of Directors

As co-founder of Child Aid, Nancy has seen the organization she helped start to honor her father grow into a vibrant organization with a diverse and multi-talented Board of Directors. Dr.  Press’ training as a cultural anthropologist helped shape Child Aid’s vision of partnering with grassroots groups to help them become self-sufficient.

Today, helping with daily Child Aid activities provides ballast to Nancy’s full-time work as a professor at the Oregon Health & Science University. Nancy graduated with a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and, after a sojourn in the world of publishing, received a Ph.D. from Duke University. Also a New Yorker by birth, Nancy loves living in Portland and always feels more at home when any plane she is in crosses the Rockies westward.

John van Keppel, Ed.D.
Project Director, Guatemala

John van Keppel brings more than 20 years in international development (and a darn cute brown and white dog, Lucy) to Child Aid and our partner projects, PROBIGUA and FUNDIT.

Dr. van Keppel has worked in Guatemala since 1997, first assisting subsistence farmers acquire land and build communities and later, with Habitat for Humanity in Guatemala City.  Prior to relocating to the “Land of Eternal Spring,” John lived in the “Land of Eternal Drizzle,” Seattle, where he led the international service-learning program at Seattle Pacific University.

John has a Ed.D. from Seattle Pacific University, a Masters of Divinity from Regent College and a BA from the University of Kansas.
